Meet Your Meat

Hello readers of my blog.

I want to share with you something drastic happened to me a few days ago... My aunt has been a full time vegetarian and that did not attracted me to become a vegetarian. Then I watched this incredibly shocking video produced in the UK. How meat eaters like me contribute to the suffering of the farm animals.

The farm pigs due to lack of open space and food, fight among themselves and even bite each other. The milk cows are put through machines that milk them and cause them so much pain and trauma.. all for the sake of us getting our calcium. Imagine if humans were forced to produce tonnes of milk for the mass market.

Chickens, ducks and turkeys face almost the same horrible fate. I remember coming across them being transported when traveling on the highways. They are stacked up one on top of the other, really congested. Do they actually survive the trip to the farm. This video also showed that eggs producing hens, they suffer severe lack of calcium after laying so much eggs. They lay something like 300 eggs per year and this exhausts most of the calcium in their bones that they eventually become so weak and some even die.

The farm animals need to be fed. And guess where these feed come from. The third world countries produce soya bean, maize and food stuff to be sold to rich countries to feed these animals. And that's where we get our steak, lamb shanks and other 'delicious' meat from. This video even shows that the same area producing the feed for one cow is sufficient to feed a group of people.

I suddenly realized that I may not need to eat all these meat. Vegetarian food is sufficient for my living. That is if we eat to live and not live to eat. Yet there are some who will be thinking, then there is no fun in living right? Well, I would say, it is a matter of choice. At least for now, I have decided to keep away from meat. Have survived for the last 7 days without it. And this is also good for me, since I am also looking for ways to eat healthy and stay healthy. Anyone out there who is going through the same non-meat diet as me!
